Joshua Michael (Tsalagiyi Detsadanilvgi) earned his BS in communication from the University of West Georgia with a focus on public relations. Recently, he completed his MA in communication from Baylor University, where his interests shifted to focus on rhetoric produced by and within Native communities. His thesis explored rhetoric’s historical treatment of Native rhetoric and advocated that rhetoricians look beyond the discipline’s traditional boundaries to better engage Native intellectuals that struggle against the daily effects of settler colonialism. Alongside his academic pursuits, Michael has labored to assist debaters in their competitive efforts, serving as an assistant debate coach for both Baylor University and several local high school programs. Starting this fall, he has accepted a position as Notre Dame High School’s assistant debate coach.
