USC Annenberg remembers the life of adjunct journalism professor and founding editor of the Los Angeles Times Magazine Michael Parrish. He died on Friday, Feb. 8. He was 67.
According to his obituary in the Los Angeles Times, Parrish died of liver failure while under Hospice care in Los Angeles.
Parrish’s tenure as editor of the Los Angeles Times Magazine lasted from 1985 to 1989. During that time, the magazine was recognized numerous times by the Greater Los Angeles Press Club.
Afterwards, Parrish worked as a staff writer for the Business section of the Times.
In addition to working for the Los Angeles Times, Parrish worked as a freelance journalist for a number of regional and national publications. In 2006, he also began utilizing his research skills as a private investigator.
Former Times staff writer Elaine Dutka said that Parrish was a "committed journalist" who possessed a "crusty yet sensitive soul."
Parrish became an adjunct faculty member of USC Annenberg in 2003. He taught magazine writing and editing.
