The life of journalism professor Leroy Aarons was celebrated February 10 in the Annenberg School auditorium. Leaders from journalism, education, civil rights and the arts traveled from around the country to participate. Aarons, who founded the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, directed USC Annenberg's Project on Sexual Orientation Issues in the News. He died November 28, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. At the celebration, Dean Geoffrey Cowan announced the creation of the Leroy F. Aarons Summer Institute on Sexual Orientation Issues in the News, designed to honor Aarons' legacy by carrying on his work to foster better coverage of social justice and sexual orientation issues.
