After World War II, when the Japanese American community returned to Los Angeles after having been forced into internment camps, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Koreatown opened its doors to those who had nowhere else to go. Now, thanks to some committed Trojans, the church is once again opening its doors — this time for college students who don’t have a place to sleep at night.
Mobile devices are altering family life in Mexico, according to a first-of-its-kind study conducted by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and Common Sense that examines device use, habits and attitudes of Mexican teens and their parents. More Mexican parents expressed concern about their teens’ use of mobile devices, and more teens reported feeling distracted and “addicted” to their phones than families in three other countries: United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Two second-year master’s degree students in the strategic public relations program are taking advantage of every opportunity as they pursue their degrees. Vivien Li spent her summer studying abroad in Hong Kong, working for a public relations firm. She was there during the protests against China and found it “eye-opening to be in Hong Kong at a time when so much history was happening.”
The USC Annenberg Innovation Lab (AnnLab) has launched a fellowship program to empower social entrepreneurs, artists, organizers, scholars, and others to increase awareness, understanding, and engagement around pressing areas of public interest — with particular attention to underrepresented communities. When Houston-area native Kaleigh Finnie was searching for the ideal college experience back in 2013, it quickly became clear that USC was the best fit.
The Annenberg Youth Academy for Media and Civic Engagement is a four-week summer intensive academy for 26 talented high school students from the communities surrounding the USC University Park and Health Science campuses. Students are exposed to the equivalent of first-year college-level courses and develop a rich conceptual understanding and practice of the necessary role that media, communications and journalism play in fashioning civic-minded thought leaders and innovators.
