The spotlight was on two USC Annenberg students Sunday night at Staples Center, where they were presented with the 2016 Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship in a ceremony at center court. Keely Eure (B.A. Broadcast Journalism, '17) and Jodee Storm Sullivan (B.A. Broadcast and Digital Journalism, '18) received the award from the Hearn family and Annenberg Dean Ernest J. Wilson III during half-time at the Lakers vs. Hawks game, which fell on what would have been the late legendary announcer's 100th birthday.

Someday a perfect storm will hit the Gulf Coast city of Houston. We don’t know when it will arrive. But we do know that, when it finally does hit the country’s fourth largest city, it could result in thousands of lives lost, millions of dollars in damages and a paralyzed American economy—and little is being done to prepare for it.

To celebrate half a century of formidable output, our Master of Arts Journalism class went to "The Serial Impulse at Gemini G.E.L.," at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—an apt location considering the very first Gemini G.E.L. edition, a series of prints by Josef Albers, went on display at LACMA in 1966.

The USC Master of Public Diplomacy program celebrates ten years of Canadian Fulbrights and 70 years of the Fulbright in Canada program. Secretly negotiated trade deals like TPP, TTIP and ACTA are the exact opposite of "public diplomacy:" smoke-filled rooms where bureaucrats and industry figures negotiate binding private law that affects the lives of hundreds of millions of people without any legislative scrutiny, let alone public participation. But across the world, netroots activists have found that their common interest in fundamental justice, their common expertise in technology and their common presence in virtual spaces provides for a surprisingly effective check against these offensives run by the most powerful multinational corporations in the history of the world.

During "Forbidden Questions about Islam: Turning Polarization into Constructive Conversation," Muslim feminist author Irshad Manji answered USC students’ most candid questions about her faith, even those questions that many would deem "offensive."

On November 17, Dean Ernest J. Wilson III appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live's "Up All Night" in conversation with Peter Bowes, BBC's L.A. correspondent. Topics included USC Annenberg student journalists' live election coverage, inspirations for the Media Center at Wallis Annenberg Hall, and president-elect Donald Trump's transition team (Dean Wilson was part of President Obama's transition team in 2008).

Growing up in a struggling community with limited family resources, Jocelyn Woods found stability at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley. The organization would become a home away from home, sheltering her on her journey from the Bay Area to USC.
