When you put your eye to the viewfinder, aim a microphone or press play on the recorder, your only thought is to get the story — accurately. This year at the 60th Annual Los Angeles Press Club’s SoCal Journalism Awards on June 24, a slew of USC Annenberg students, alumni and even one of our esteemed professors got a bonus — honor and recognition for a job well done.
“I remember watching Obama’s inauguration in 2009 a few months after I came to the United States, and I never imagined I would be covering an inauguration eight years later while in college,” said Melody Jiang ’17, a USC Annenberg alumna with a degree in broadcast and digital journalism.
The best part of a day of service? It usually turns into a day of learning and inspiration.
When Steve Kearns graduated from USC Annenberg in 2016, he was ready to jump into a professional career. He had been drawn to public relations because of the practical tools, resources and skill-building the program offers. While an undergraduate PR major, Kearns made connections while interning for leading entertainment brands and learned firsthand knowledge about industry needs. These real-life experiences gave Kearns the confidence to remain focused, take initiative and be creative in his approach.

At 11:58 a.m. on the morning of April 18, staff at the Los Angeles Times received an email directing them to the newsroom. This was no ordinary Monday morning meeting.
