The family of Chick Hearn continued to honor the late sportscaster's memory with the annual presentation of the Chick Hearn Scholar Award to two USC Annenberg students Nov. 28. The 2014-15 recipients are Junior Robby Kolanz, Broadcast and Digital Journalism, and Junior Caroline Deisley, Broadcast and Digital Journalism and Sports Media Studies & Business. Both will receive a $6,000 scholarship and have the opportunity to intern with Time Warner Cable Sportsnet. On campus, Deisley serves as a multimedia journalist with Annenberg TV News and also aids the USC Social Media Director in managing USC Athletics social media accounts and writes for the USC RipsIt blog. Kolanz is also an ATVN multimedia journalist, an intern for the USC Sports Information Department, and joined the USC football team last year as a redshirt sophomore wide receiver.
Both students were presented with the award by the Hearn family and Annenberg Dean Ernest J. Wilson III on the court during the Lakers vs. Timberwolves halftime at the Staples Center.
Prior to the ceremony, Deisley and Kolanz were interviewed by Stu Lantz and Bill MacDonald of Time Warner Cable Sportsnet, and Dave Shore of 710ESPN. The Chick Hearn Scholar scholarship is
funded by a Lakers endowment established in honor of legendary Los Angeles sportscaster Francis Dale "Chick" Hearn, who broadcasted more than 3,000 Lakers basketball games over 40 years until his death in 2002. View the full photo gallery of the 2014 Chick Hearn Scholar Award ceremony.
