USC Annenberg professor Sasha Anawalt was interviewed for a feature in the November issue of Art in America magazine about the changing field of art criticism and arts journalism.
“What’s great about our times is that the playing field in many respects has been leveled,” said Anawalt. “Everything has been disrupted. It’s all new and open to possibilities."
Anawalt, who is also the director of the Arts Journalism programs at USC Annenberg, said that the programs available to students at USC Annenberg are evolving with the field by placing an emphasis on multimedia and digital media. She added that, during her time at USC Annenberg, she has realized how collaborative journalism can be.
“The ripple effect of a dynamic, engaged conversation with art is so powerful,” said Anawalt. “It’s powerful for news in general.”
Despite the rapid changes in the arts writing field, it is important “to have a visceral, passionate, deep connection to and love for an art form.”
