USC Annenberg faculty and doctoral students will play an important role in the annual Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication Convention from Aug. 5-8 in Boston.

Research topics to be presented range from gender studies, to the country’s first ethnic newspaper, to community relations.

Additionally, Dean Ernest J. Wilson III and School of Journalism director Geneva Overholser will host Annenberg’s annual ¡Fiesta Annenberg!, a reception at the convention on Thursday, Aug. 6. Boston-area alumni, faculty and friends are invited to attend and celebrate the additions of journalism professors Robert Hernandez and Andrew Lih.

The following USC Annenberg faculty or doctoral candidates will moderate sessions, be panelists or present papers during the convention:

	Journalism professor Laura Castañeda will present “Every Intersection Has a Story” in the Community College Journalism Association, Small Programs Interest Group, Scholastic Journalism Division and Graduate Interest Group. She will also present "How to Cover Court Trials."
	Executive in residence David Westphal (pictured) and USC vice provost for globalization Adam Clayton Powell III, both senior fellows of USC Annenberg’s Center on Communication Leadership and Policy, will present new research findings at a panel session titled “Communication Leadership Research Presentation: The Future of News.”
	Journalism professor Félix Gutiérrez will be a panelist on “A Diversity Legend: Honoring and Remembering Dr. Lionel Barrow, Jr.” He will also sit on the panel “The Bicentennial of the Latino Press: Understanding Journalism’s Future by a Forgotten Past.” Additionally, Gutiérrez will give an introduction, discussing the country's first newspaper for people of color, El Misisipi.
	Journalism professor Larry Pryor will act as the Senior Scholar Discussant in the discussion on “Participation Divide Among ‘Online Experts’: Prediction of Psychological Factors, Experience and Skills on Web Content Creation Among College Students.”
	Journalism professor and Director of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman is moderator and discussant of his PF&R Panel "The Image of the Gay Journalist in Popular Culture." He will premiere a 14-minute excerpt from "The Image of the Gay Journalist in Movies and Television, 1929-2009."
	Public relations professor Jay Wang will present “Images of the U.S. and Consumer Politics in the Chinese Marketplace” in the Public Relation division.
	Communication doctoral students Jae Eun Chung and Helen Hua Wang will participate in the Communication Technology division discussing “Current Trends in Communication Technology Research.”
	Global Media and Communication student Laura Schlotthauer will present “Where Are All the ‘Others’?: Reconstructions of Inequality and Discrimination in Public Service Broadcast” in the group discussing “Equalities and Inequalities.”
	Doctoral student Matthew Weber will present a paper in the Newspaper division called “One Product, Three Markets: How Market Segmentation Informs Newspapers About their Online Readership.”
