More than 50 USC Annenberg faculty and students will attend the 2011 International Communication Association Conference in Boston today through May 30.
The conference provides an international forum for the critical evaluation of research in the field of communication. This year’s conference, the 61st annual, will cover a wide array of topics ranging from communication and technology to journalism studies.
The 2011 top paper award in the Children, Adolescents and the Media division was given to doctoral student Meryl Alper for her paper titled: “Representations of Non-American Foreigners in American Children’s Television.”
“This will be my first ICA, so I'm excited to meet with fellow academics studying children, adolescents and media, whose work I have long admired — and oft cited!," Alper said. "I'm tremendously honored to have received top paper recognition as a first-year Ph.D. student."
Doctoral student Nikki Usher will have multiple papers featured at the conference including: “Mapping the Relationship Between Professional and Citizen Journalists: A Critical Inquiry,” “The Decline and Adaptation of Gay Newspapers - and the Rise of Gay News Blogs: Transformations in Gay Journalism in the Digital Age,” and “News Routine or Deliberate Choice: News Construction at Money Talk Public Radio.”
“I know that I'll be getting some of the best national and international feedback, and interaction with some of the most dynamic faculty in the world,” Usher said.
