Three USC Annenberg graduate students produced "Tale of Two Cities," for the July 21 edition of California Connected, a PBS program covering state and local issues. Laura Cavanaugh, Leo Juarez and Dave Eisenberg edited and produced the segment for their News21 summer fellowship program. "Tale of Two Cities" investigated immigration policies of San Bernardino and Maywood, Calif. While some in San Bernardino aim to strengthen anti-illegal immigrant policies through local initiative, the predominantly Latino community of Maywood has declared itself a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants. Despite their opposing agendas, "they both got tired of waiting for the federal government to do something," the story explains. The News21 team, advised by journalism professors Patricia Dean and Judy Muller, also produces Immigration Outpost, a news blog covering immigration issues.
