School of Journalism director Geneva Overholser (pictured) was a panelist for the Library Foundation of Los Angeles' open community forum, "Los Angeles Without the Los Angeles Times?" on Aug. 14 at the Los Angeles Central Library.
ALOUD at Central Library and the Los Angeles Institute for Humanities at USC held the forum to discuss the recent status of the Los Angeles Times after the July 14 staff cuts that laid off 150 editors and reporters and leaves the paper without a publisher for the first time in its 120-year history.
"The paper we knew and cared about is fast disappearing, and the real losers are the people of Los Angeles," said Josh Getlin, former City Hall reporter.
Other panelists included Robin Kramer, chief of staff to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Kit Rachilis, editor-in-chief of Los Angeles Magazine; and Joel Sappell, award-winning Los Angeles Times veteran.
