USC Annenberg students, alumni and faculty received more than two dozen nominations for the Los Angeles Press Club’s 55th Annual SoCal Journalism Awards.
Students from USC Annenberg’s student operated news site Neon Tommy , and USC’s television multimedia news operation, Annenberg TV News (ATVN) are up against journalists from some of the biggest outlets in Southern California including the Los Angeles Times, CNN and The Orange County Register.
“These writers have worked so incredibly hard to report responsibly and tell engaging stories for our site, all the while balancing school work and their real lives outside of Annenberg,” said Editor in Chief of Neon Tommy Catherine Green. “I'm so glad to see everyone get due credit, even though we've still got a month to wait before we find out who takes home a plaque.” Green recently finished her master’s degree in journalism, was named Outstanding Graduate Online Journalism Student of her graduating class, and served as Editor in Chief of Annenberg’s highly praised Neon Tommy from May 2012 to May 2013. She was nominated for Online Journalist of the Year and two of her articles are in the running for Best Online News Story and Best Online Feature Story. “Obviously it's a little intimidating…I read Dennis Romero and Chris Hedges all the time,” said Green referring to her competition in the Best Online Journalist category. “It's huge for me personally to even be in the running with them. Honestly, I'm looking forward to shaking their hands at the awards dinner in June.”
The 55th Annual So Cal Journalism Awards and LA Press Club’s Centennial Celebration will be held Sunday, June 23rd at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
